An existing house should not be assumed capable of carrying another floor simply because the new storey uses lightweight wood framing. The engineer must identify how added loads travel through walls, beams, posts, and foundations.

For a second-storey addition, vertical and lateral load paths should be reviewed together rather than treating the upper floor as an independent structure.


Structural Drawings and Site Verification


Structural drawings should clearly identify new framing, supports, connections, and modifications to the existing house. Existing conditions must be sufficiently understood before final structural assumptions are made.


Site verification may be needed to confirm concealed framing, member sizes, support locations, or foundation conditions. This is especially relevant for older homes where original structural drawings are unavailable or previous renovations have changed the load path.
