Parsways provided Part 4 structural engineering for an agricultural building in Ashburn, Ontario, focused on the primary steel framing.

1. The Challenge

The project required Part 4 structural design while the broader Part 9 building and foundation design remained by others.


Structural Framing:
The scope included steel beams, HSS columns, connections, and associated details supporting the building and storage areas.


Foundation Coordination:
Steel column locations required pad footings and localized foundation reinforcement coordinated with the strip-footing system.


Design Criteria:
The structural work was required to comply with OBC 2024 and the applicable steel standards noted on the drawings.

2. The Engineering Solution

Parsways designed the structural system and coordinated the primary steel framing with the architectural layout.


a) Steel Framing:
Steel beam and HSS column sizes were established, with bearing, base-plate, and beam-to-beam connection requirements defined.


b) Foundation Support:
Pad footings and localized reinforcement were detailed at steel column locations and tied into the supporting strip-footing system.


c) Code and Fabrication:
Structural steel requirements addressed fabrication, bolting, welding, anchorage, and shop-drawing coordination under the noted standards.

3. The Outcome

A permit-stage structural design established the primary steel system and foundation interfaces for the agricultural building in accordance with OBC 2024 and applicable CSA requirements.
