Structural Assessment of Protective Bollards for a Municipal Transit Facility- Toronto

Parsways completed a detailed structural assessment and capacity verification of concrete-filled steel protective bollards installed to safeguard above-ground diesel fuel tanks at a municipal transit facility.

The assessment evaluated as-built alignment variances, impact resistance, and overall serviceability in accordance with OBC Part 4 and CSA S16 structural standards.

1 | Project Overview

Location: Arrow Road Garage, Toronto, Ontario
Completion: 2024
Sector: Transportation / Industrial

Scope Highlights

  • Structural condition assessment and impact performance analysis

  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for bollards installed with eccentricity

  • Soil–structure interaction modeling

  • Field verification and sealed engineering report

2 | The Challenge

  • Addressing misaligned bollards resulting in non-uniform load transfer

  • Increased bending demand at the caisson–bollard interface

  • Need to confirm structural adequacy without requiring reinstallation

3 | Engineering Results

  • Modeled impact response using detailed FEA simulations

  • Verified soil–structure interaction and realistic boundary conditions

  • Confirmed all bollards meet required impact-resistance and code criteria

  • Delivered a sealed engineering report authorizing the installation to remain in service
