Attached Covered Patio Structure & Foundation - Hamilton
This project involved the structural and foundation design of a new attached covered patio at a residential property in Hamilton, Ontario. The new structure was integrated with the existing two-storey dwelling and designed for permit approval.
Parsways prepared complete structural drawings, foundation detailing, and connection design in accordance with the 2024 Ontario Building Code and City of Hamilton requirements.

1. The Challenge
The project required replacing an existing exterior patio area with a new covered structure attached to the house.
Existing Building Integration:
The new patio roof had to connect directly to the existing rim board without overstressing the house framing.
Foundation Constraints:
Foundations were designed based on assumed soil bearing conditions and required coordination for below-grade support.
Load & Weather Considerations:
Snow, wind, and lateral loads had to be addressed while maintaining proper drainage and minimum roof slope.
2. The Engineering Solution
Parsways developed a coordinated structural and foundation system aligned with OBC 2024 loading requirements.
a) Structural Framing System:
The roof was framed using pressure-treated wood joists, multi-ply beams, and posts with engineered connections.
b) Helical Pile Foundations:
Helical piles were specified with defined axial, uplift, and lateral capacities to support the new loads safely.
c) Ledger & Connection Detailing:
A ledger board connection to the existing rim board was detailed using approved structural fasteners and joist hangers.
3. The Outcome
The project resulted in a structurally integrated, code-compliant covered patio designed for long-term performance. The final design established clear load paths from roof to foundation, ensured stable connection to the existing house, and met structural, foundation, and weather protection requirements under OBC 2024.
