Interior Wall Removal & Structural Support Design – Uxbridge
This residential project involved the structural design required to remove an existing interior wall and create a more open ground-floor layout.

Parsways designed the new load-transfer system, including beam support, glulam posts, reinforced concrete pads, and structural connection details for permit submission.
Location: Uxbridge, Ontario
Completion: May 2026
Sector: Residential

1. The Challenge
The project required removal of an existing ground-floor wall while maintaining support for the roof, floor framing, and surrounding structural elements.

Existing Load Path:
The existing structure relied on wood framing, solid wood beams, cinder block supports, roof trusses, and a vaulted roof condition.

Structural Opening:
Removing the wall required a new engineered support system to safely carry loads across the opened interior space.

Site Conditions:
Existing dimensions, bearing points, and connections had to be verified on site before construction and shoring.
2. The Engineering Solution
Parsways prepared a permit-stage structural design focused on replacing the removed wall with a clear and continuous load path.

a. Beam Support Design:
A new steel beam and LVL header were designed to support the opened area and maintain structural continuity.

b. Vertical Load Transfer:
New glulam posts and reinforced concrete pads were designed to transfer loads from the beam down to the foundation level.

c. Structural Connections:
Connection details were provided for the beam, posts, hangers, plates, welds, and fasteners to support construction and permit review.
3. The Outcome
The project resulted in a permit-ready structural design package for the interior wall removal. The design provided a clear load path from the opened ground-floor area to the foundation, reduced construction uncertainty, and supported safe execution in accordance with OBC 2024, CSA S16, CSA O122, and applicable Township of Uxbridge requirements.
