Structural Design for Residential Addition and Renovation - Uxbridge
Structural engineering was completed for a residential addition and renovation to an existing detached dwelling.
The work coordinated new foundations, floor and roof framing, and structural supports with the proposed architectural layout.

1. The Challenge
The project involved integrating a residential addition and revised layouts with the existing two-storey dwelling.
Existing Conditions:
Several existing framing and below-grade conditions were unconfirmed and required verification before construction.
Structural Alterations:
New openings, modified walls, and expanded rooms required continuous load paths through existing and new construction.
Building Integration:
The foundation, floor, and roof systems needed safe connections to the existing structure and revised roof geometry.
2. The Engineering Solution
A coordinated design was developed for the foundations, framing, openings, and support systems.
a) Foundation Design:
Reinforced walls, strip and isolated footings, and connections to the existing foundation were specified.
b) Structural Framing:
Steel and engineered wood beams, columns, built-up studs, headers, and lintels were designed for the proposed layouts.
c) Verification and Connections:
Floor and roof framing, structural connections, and verification procedures for existing foundation supports were established.
3. The Outcome
The completed permit-stage design defines the structural system for the addition and renovation, supporting safe load transfer, coordinated construction, and compliance with the Ontario Building Code 2024.
