Residential Walkout Entrance Structural Design - Keswick
This residential structural engineering project involved a new exterior walkout entrance for an existing dwelling in Keswick, Ontario.
Parsways prepared the structural design for concrete retaining walls, exterior stairs, foundation connections, and door-opening support for permit submission.
Location: Keswick, Ontario
Completion: October 2026
Sector: Residential

1. The Challenge
The residential walkout required a new exterior entrance, with structural work coordinated around the existing foundation and building framing.
Foundation and Stair Support:
New concrete retaining walls and exterior stairs required defined reinforcement, footing support, and connections at the walkout.
Existing Building Integration:
The exterior door opening required structural support for adjacent wood framing and the existing brick veneer above.
Drainage and Access Requirements:
The below-grade walls and exterior access required coordinated drainage, damp-proofing, insulation, and guard provisions.
2. The Engineering Solution
Parsways developed the structural walkout plan, with requirements for the entrance and its supporting elements.
a) Reinforced Concrete Design:
Reinforced concrete retaining walls, footings, stairs, and landings were detailed, including reinforcement placement and isolation joints.
b) Foundation and Opening Connections:
Foundation dowels were specified to connect new concrete to existing construction, while a wood header and steel lintel supported the door opening.
c) Drainage and Guard Provisions:
The design specified damp-proofing, foundation drainage, insulation, and guard requirements, with guard anchorage subject to manufacturer-engineered shop drawings.
3. The Outcome
The completed structural design established a coordinated solution for the residential walkout, addressing foundation support, exterior stairs, and structural connections to the existing dwelling. The permit-issued design incorporated reinforced concrete construction, drainage provisions, and exterior access requirements in accordance with the Ontario Building Code 2024.
