Structural Design for Residential Rear Addition – Brantford
This project involved structural engineering services for a residential rear addition in Brantford, Ontario. Parsways Inc. provided stamped structural markups for the foundation, roof framing, and connections to the existing dwelling.

The scope was limited to the highlighted structural work areas, including reinforced CMU foundation walls, roof joist support, ledger connections, drainage, and load transfer requirements in accordance with OBC 2024.
Location: Brantford, Ontario
Completion: August 2025
Sector: Residential

1. The Challenge
The addition required coordination between new structural elements and the existing residential building.

Foundation Interface:
New reinforced CMU foundation walls had to connect to the existing foundation while maintaining structural continuity.

Roof Framing Support:
The roof framing required joist sizing, ledger support, hangers, and bolted connections to the existing structure.

Site Conditions:
Drainage, waterproofing, backfill, and grading requirements had to be addressed around the new foundation walls.
2. The Engineering Solution
Parsways prepared stamped structural markups focused on code compliance, constructability, and integration with the existing dwelling.

a) Foundation Design:
Reinforced CMU walls, footing reinforcement, vertical dowels, and a reinforced bond beam were specified.

b) Structural Connections:
Epoxy-anchored reinforcing bars, grouted CMU cells, ledger bolts, and galvanized joist hangers were detailed.

c) Load Requirements:
The design accounted for residential floor loading, Brantford snow load, assumed soil bearing, drainage, and waterproofing requirements.
3. The Outcome
The project resulted in a stamped, permit-oriented structural design for a residential rear addition. The markups provided clear direction for the foundation, roof framing, and connection details while supporting compliance with OBC 2024.
