Steel Pile Dock and Boathouse Substructure Design - Muskoka Lakes
Parsways Inc. completed the structural design for a steel pile substructure to support a future dock and boathouse. The engineering scope included the limit states design of foundational piling, crosser beams, and stringers.
The framework was engineered to safely distribute vertical gravity loads and resist lateral ice thrust. All design processes complied with the current Ontario Building Code and applicable CSA standards.
Location: Muskoka Lakes, Ontario
Completion: March 2026
Sector: Residential

1. The Challenge
The marine project required a foundation capable of supporting high assembly live loads and winter snow accumulation.
Dynamic Ice Thrust:
The waterfront substructure had to be engineered to resist significant lateral ice-thrust forces.
Bedrock Slippage Risks:
Variable underwater profiles required a specialized installation strategy to prevent lateral slippage on sloping bedrock.
Structural Corrosion:
The structural steel elements required continuous long-term protection against water exposure and environmental corrosion.
2. The Engineering Solution
Parsways engineered a high-capacity steel foundation utilizing limit states design principles to ensure long-term stability.
a) Foundation Piling:
Five-inch steel pipe piles were specified to be driven to refusal directly onto competent bedrock.
b) Structural Framing Optimization:
A rigid grid of W6x25 crosser beams and W6x15 stringers was designed to distribute vertical loads.
c) Bracing and Corrosion Defense:
Diagonal angle bracing and a sacrificial corrosion allowance were integrated to safeguard the substructure.
3. The Outcome
The project resulted in a fully stamped, permit-ready structural package accepted by the local authority. The design minimized structural risk during pile installation, provided a clear structural layout for marine execution, and ensured long-term structural stability in full compliance with building codes and applicable CSA standards.
