Structural Design Review for Elevated Cedar Deck – Sandfield
Parsways Inc. provided structural engineering services for an attached elevated rough-sawn cedar deck in Sandfield, Ontario. The scope included structural review, design optimization based on available materials, and preparation of stamped structural drawings for permit submission.

The design was completed in accordance with the Ontario Building Code (OBC 2024), with a focus on clear load paths, connection detailing, and constructability.
Location: Sandfield, Ontario
Completion: January 2026
Sector: Residential
1. The Challenge
The project was governed by the use of rough-sawn cedar for all primary structural members.

Material Limitations:
Use of cedar 2x8 members required strict control of spans and spacing due to reduced structural capacity compared to standard framing materials.

Support Conditions:
Round cedar log posts supported on helical piles required careful consideration of bearing conditions and connection detailing to ensure reliable load transfer.

2. The Engineering Solution
A refined structural system was developed to work within material constraints while maintaining code compliance and structural performance.

a) Framing Optimization:
Joist spacing was reduced to 12" o.c. to improve performance within allowable limits.

b) Load Transfer System:
4-ply built-up 2x8 beams were designed to transfer loads efficiently to timber posts and helical pile supports.

c) Stability and Connection Detailing:
Knee braces and defined connection details were incorporated to ensure stability and continuity of load paths.
3. The Outcome
A permit-ready structural package was delivered, providing a practical and code-compliant solution aligned with project constraints and available materials.
